37XV555DB – 37″ Regza XV Series LCD Television from Toshiba
The Toshiba 37XV555DB LCD TV belongs to the Regza XV series. This series is specially for those who are dabbling in the high definition content. The Regza XV series’ LCD televisions are HD ready 1080p, Digital Ready with HDMI 3 technology and displays of resolution 1920 X 1080 pixels. Here, we review the 37” version of the Regza XV series, there are also 32“ and 42“ version of the same.
Less stylish design:
Though 37XV555DB LCD Television does not have a stylish design, it has a sleek one. The sharp looking exterior will certainly suite your living room. The display is a 37 inch LCD display.
A bad remote control:
The remote control provided with the TV is poorly designed as some of the buttons are poorly positioned and the EPG (Electronic Program Guide) navigational key prove to be unhelpful.
Sufficient ports:
Toshiba 37XV555DB hi-def LCD TV is sufficiently equipped with a good selection of sockets. It includes 3 HDMI sockets to access hi-def equipments, digital and analog sockets which allow you to connect your TV to either the surround sound amplifiers or the stereo. It also includes Hear Audio Description, an additional narrative feature (for the visually challenged) that can be listened to via both, headphones or speakers. But awfully, there is no USB or SD card slot. Obviously, I has the Free View feature.
The not-satisfactory picture quality:
Though Toshiba claims that the TV is Hi-Def, some of the disadvantages that can be witnessed in the standard definition units can be seen in this model too. Some of the redeeming features includes the lack of fine details, soft pictures, colour retentions and poor viewing angles this raises the question if the Dynamic Contrast feature really works .
Audio quality:
The audio quality of Toshiba 37XV555DB 37-inch LCD TV was good but cannot be said to the best, as we noticed that audio of higher frequencies lacked detail and those of lower frequencies sounded very mediocre. The overall effect seemed to be filled with muffles and muddles.
User friendliness:
The set-up of 37XV555DB is very simple. The on screen menu is very user friendly and is designed in a very simple manner. The instruction manual that is provided is also well explained and hence setting up the system is not at all going to be a problem.
Other features included:
Being “Digital Approved”, you can receive the free to view digital broadcasts via its standard aerial sans the need for any of the additional digital decoder boxes.
A very interesting feature that Toshiba has incorporated in 37XV555DB widescreen LCD TV is that, you can completely turn off the TV, when you do not want it in the stand-by mode. In this way, you can save a lot of power by turning it completely off and leaving it in the stand-by mode only when you want the updates to be done.
Excellent Game Mode:
The most talked about feature of 37XV555DB is its Game Mode. It is a dedicated setting for Game lovers. Well, you need to select the “Game Mode” as you connect your HDMI games console, now watch how the picture automatically adjusts offering you a gaming picture that is more natural. Thus, any online gamer certainly has an advantage over the other LCD TVs in the current market that lacks a dedicated Gaming mode.
Energy efficient:
The TV consumes as high as 174 watts when switched on, but the ambient light sensor can reduce the power consumption to even less than 100 watts when you are watching the TV in dark.
Verdict:
The pros and cons of Toshiba 37XV555DB HD LCD TV are equally balanced and hence, it is all up to you. If you are wanting to have an extremely stylish set with high end audio and video quality, then, you are not going to like it. But if you are not that fussy about its disadvantages, 37XV555DB is worth a try specially for its gaming capabilities.

Only comment we have is that the power on-off switch appears to have a major design fault in that we have had the set for less than 1 year and already have had two failures.

Don’t buy this TV! 4 reasons. 1. On/Off power switch will break if you use it regularly to save energy because it’s badly designed, it’s miss-aligned by design so stress is put on a small plastic square at the edge instead of the centre. 2.The set takes ages to power up out of sleep mode. 3.The remote has a very narrow beam. 4.Sound is often ‘muffled’. It’s redeeming feature is the picture is great on gaming mode.
