Toshiba 23W330DB Widescreen LCD TV Review
23W330DB – 23″ Widescreen HD Ready LCD Television from Toshiba
The Toshiba corporation is a multinational conglomerate that has its main business infrastructure to be consumer products, electronic devices and components. They are quite well known in the industry of the LCD TVs too. The following review is on their 23” LCD TV, the Toshiba 23W330DB.
Being an unabashed LCD TV reviewers, we are generally attracted more towards the larger happenings. But today we are not focusing exclusively on a king sized LCD TV for a simple reason that there will definitely be some space in modern homes for a secondary TV in say rest room or kitchen or even the bedroom. Here we are, with the Toshiba 23W330DB Widescreen LCD TV.

PC monitor like screen:
As we have discussed earlier, the Toshiba 23W330DB LCD TV is a small screen 23″ LCD TV. Deign wise, this TV cannot be said to be a stunner. It has got very broad bezels giving it a sort of odd look and its rectangular stand is not impressive as well. However, the matte black bezel contrasts well with the matte silver that has been applied along the bottom edge of the TV and its stand. The rear of the TV is surprisingly flat and overall, just a glance at it would give you a feel that it looks more like a PC monitor rather than a TV.
Having a widescreen design, 23W330DB is having its native resolution to be 1,366 x 768 pixels and it is also HD ready TV. Being a 23″ HD Ready, it is identified as one of the most suited for sky HD multi-room playback and also for connecting HD gaming consoles or a Blu ray player or even an up scaling DVD player.
Connectivity:
Coming to the part of connectivity, the 23W330DB LCD Television comes with a single HDMI input and component video input. But having talked about the three HD sources, it is really stingy for Toshiba to have provided with just one HDMI input. For the sake of PC connection, this 23″ TV has got a D-sub input. This connectivity option makes sure that the 23W330DB is well suitable for a study room. You would not have expected to find a digital tuner built in for this price range. But surprisingly, the 23W330DB has got one along with the electronic guide functionality. Though this is not a big deal as these features are quite standard in the big sized television sets, for the size of the TV and its price tag, it seems to be pleasing.
Interface:
The interface looks quite outdated, but we do not have much to complain about it. You will be able to find a few interesting elements in the movie mode that allows you to tweak the progressive scan processing to accommodate film as opposed to video sources. It also allows you to reduce the MPEG noise that reduces artefacts while viewing the digital tuner and the 3D digital comb filter too, which also aids in further reducing some video noise types.
Appreciable features in23W330DB:
So far, you might have found Toshiba 23W330DB Hig Definition LCD TV to be very pleasing and the good news is that it has got more interesting things waiting. It claims to be having a very respectable native contrast ratio of 700:1. One fact that has to be kept in mind is that, that the 700:1 contrast ratio is as high as it gets, since unlike many larger screens, the 23W330DB does not feature a dynamic backlight system for reducing light output during dark scenes. The Dynamic Backlight system is a trick which helps make black levels appear deeper.
Superior picture quality:
Picture quality wise too, the Toshiba 23W330DB gets a good score. The quality is nothing short of excellent keeping its price tag in mind. There are especially two major factors that help 23W330DB stand out from the herd. One of them being the fact that it is free from motion blur and the other is the relatively profound black level response. We were able to detect that the TV was excellent in eliminating motion blur as we watched a premiership rugby match. The 23W330DB surprised us by displaying very little blurring as the players were charging around the pitches and threw the ball. But, we have to admit that there were still few problems with the motion, even the most latest high end LCD TVs find it extremely tricky to overcome the motion related issues. Yet, it is worth mentioning that Toshiba’s blurring or softness is seldom severely distracting.

Black levels and Colours:
Coming to the black level factor, in some of the dark scenes on movie like the night time shots, the 23W330DB exhibits very less common grey cloudiness that afflicts the budget LCD TVs. Again, we would like to stress that we are not trying to say that there is no cloudiness at all, but just that the 23W330DB outperforms its rivals. Having shown a great performance with the black levels, it does not come as a surprise to us that it does a great job with the colours too. The skin tones look very natural both in HD and standard definition and the colour blends are very smooth and vibrant. This excellence in quality of the pictures is made possible by decent colour processing and the pixel density of 1,366 x 768 that spans the 23” TV screen.
Sound:
The sound is quite decent. The bass is dominating than what must be usual.
Great value for money:
It would not at all be fair on our part if we do not mention that the 23W330DB HD LCD TV has got a very cheap tag on it for a 23 inch TV keeping in mind that Toshiba is a main stream brand and hence the few compromises that are made in some of the features are acceptable. The fact that its screen can serve as both a PC monitor and a TV makes its low price tag even more appealing.
Warranty:
Toshiba offers 23W330DB LCD TV one year limited warranty for parts and labour.
Verdict:
The Toshiba 23W330DB LCD TV has turned out to be one of the best choices for a second room TV. It has certainly outperformed its price point. Though the design and sound factors are not that pleasing, the other factors such as, connectivity, features and picture quality are overwhelming. We are glad to recommend 23W330DB as a great second room option.
